The Foresite OAI-ORE Project

Foresite is a collaborative project between The University of Liverpool, HP Labs and JSTOR, funded by the UK Joint Information Systems Committee. The aim of the project was to create ORE Resource Maps for all of the JSTOR holdings. This allows ORE aware clients to understand the semantics of the information presented about the journals, issues, articles and pages, and act on it appropriately. 

 

Description

An output of this project was a visualization tool that characterizes the context of a JSTOR article. This visualization is overlaid on the JSTOR article on the JSTOR site itself. This works via the firefox browser (only in firefox not available in internet explorer), pluggable extension tool greasemonkey and the foresite libraries.

Instructions To Install

  1. It only works in Mozillav Firefox—so you need to open that as your browser. If you need to download and install Firefox, you can download the latest version from http://www.mozilla.com
  2. Download greasemonkey
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748
  3. Download the foresite libraries
    http://foresite.cheshire3.org/explorer/foresite-explorer.user.js
  4. Do a search in JSTOR—using the normal JSTOR website. Click on an article to go to the first page of the article.
  5. Click on the ExplORE icon on the right hand side of the screen. This will bring up the Foresite overlay.
  6. Click on the central circle of the logo on the overlay screen—this brings up the items for the article. The relationships (lines) are defined in the key on the upper right hand side. Click the circles to find out the information for each item.
